Mental health

My work in mental health falls into three broad areas: the ways in which gendered social roles influence mental health, the ways in which our physical and social environment shape our wellbeing, and the influence of early childhood adversity on mental health in adulthood.

For example, I am carrying out research to investigate how gendered social role occupation influences stress and mental health. This includes a collaboration with Dr Susan Rasmussen of the University of Strathclyde, looking at the ways in which relationship quality mediates relationships between role occupation and mental health.

Dundee and Me: In this project, funded by the Wellcome Trust, I worked with Mr Eddie Small of the University of Dundee and Dr Robin Sloan of Abertay University to design and deliver an interdisciplinary public outreach and research project to look at the ways in which children and mental health service users experienced their city and how these experiences influenced their mood. A short video on the project can be found here.

I have recently collaborated with the Glasgow Pain Management Group to investigate whether indices of socioeconomic deprivation predict likelihood of being invited to, and attending, a pain management programme.

Funding: This research has been funded by the MRC, Wellcome Trust, and the University of Dundee.
